African American awards banquet celebrates silver anniversary 0

African American Awards BanquetIt was a black tie affair at the Shreveport-Bossier-Desoto African American Awards Banquet Saturday evening.

The awards committee is celebrating its 25th anniversary. More than 300 people were in attendance. The banquet featured several performers. Dr. Haywood Joiner, Jr was the keynote speaker.

The 2013 African Americans “Make a Difference” Achievement Award recipients include: Dr. Rickey Moore, Sr., Dr Haywood Joiner, Jr., Lawrence Schuford, Brenda Richardson, Dr. Patsy Latin, Detries Morris, Priscilla Adams, Lee Jeter, Shirley Roberson, Herman Vital, forever Jones, Ballenstine Hopkins, Jr.

“I think it’s truly an honor and I’m accepting this award not just for me but on behalf of the Fuller Center for Housing and all of the other organizations that partner with us to make sure that what we’re doing is something that’s going to improve the community and quality of life for citizens of Shreveport and Bossier,” said Lee Jeter of the Fuller Center for Housing of Northwest Louisiana.

Organizer Ken Latin said there were more than 50 people nominated for the award.

Proceeds of the banquet go toward scholarships that will be handed out in June. Due to the great turnout, the committee hopes to hand out 15 to 20 scholarships. For more information about the scholarships, call (318) 422-0876.

This is the first time the banquet was held at Sunrise Baptist Church.
